What The Elements in Astrology Reveal About You

Earth. Fire. Water. Air.

Four elements that make up so much of the natural world. The air we breathe, the water we drink, the fire that warms us, and the earth that sustains us.

In Astrology, these four elements are the building blocks for the Zodiacal wheel. And they reveal a lot about your natural personality tendencies.

A bit of background: the Zodiac wheel is grouped into four elements, three signs in each. These are known as triplicities. Each triplicity – Water, Earth, Fire and Air – describes a different set of general personality tendencies. Are you a naturally outgoing person who thrives off of learning new things? Do you have a strong emotional intuition and ability to empathize with others?

At the most basic level, the elements tell you something fundamental about your personality.

  • Fire and Air signs are yang signs (active or “masculine” energy) – they have a natural drive towards taking action or communicating.
  • Earth and Water signs are yin signs (receptive or “feminine” energy) – they have a natural tendency towards feeling and nurturing.

Each element is expressed a little differently, depending on its zodiac sign. But learning about the element that is dominant in your birth chart will help you understand the ways you naturally respond to the challenges of daily life, and the skills you’re naturally good at.

Think of a fire burning: bright, bold, active and glowing. In astrology, this element is associated with fearless creativity and inspired action. Someone with a fire-dominant chart is likely to be adventurous, enthusiastic, passionate and dynamic.

Natural Skills: Fearless will and a child-like ability to express themselves fully.

Advice for Fire Signs: Fire can heat up quickly. Be mindful that this passion doesn’t turn into unhealthy competition, aggression or rage.

Water: Cancer, Scorpio, Pisces

Water symbolizes all that is deep, emotional, healing, and intuitive. These signs are the natural healers of the Zodiac and have an ability to empathize deeply with others. They tend to rely on emotions rather than logic and are highly perceptive of their environment.

Natural Skills: Deep emotional intuition and compassion.

Advice for Water Signs: Because you’re so sensitive, you can get swept up in emotions. Emotional boundaries are very important.

Earth: Taurus, Virgo, Capricorn

The Earth element is associated with our sensory experience of the physical world: our bodies, our finances and our daily routine. Earth signs are practical, useful, grounded, sensual and tactical. And, yes, they’re very good with money.

Natural Skills: An intuitive understanding of how the material world works; a logical and practical perspective.

Advice for Earth Signs: Be mindful not to become so pragmatic that you forget about people’s feelings.

Air: Gemini, Libra, Aquarius

High up in the sky, the furthest element from Earth: Air symbolizes freedom, independence, idealism and detached observation. Air signs are able to take a higher perspective from the clouds, objectively seeing the world from different viewpoints. They are free spirits who need space to explore things intellectually.

Natural Skills: Highly social and communicative; natural curiosity and love of knowledge.

Advice for Air Signs: While you’re soaring above the world, observing from 50,000 feet – be careful not to become too detached that you lose sight of the ground.
